How to Wear a Keffiyeh: 6 Styles, Step by Step

How to Wear a Keffiyeh: 6 Styles, Step by Step

A keffiyeh is a square — 110 cm on the side for most of ours — and almost every way of wearing one starts with the same move: fold it corner to corner into a triangle, then work from the long edge. Get that fold right and the rest is variations.

Why the square matters

A rectangle will not hold a head wrap. It slips at the back, it will not sit level, and the tail ends up either too short to tie or long enough to trail. The square gives you a triangle with a long edge roughly 155 cm wide, which is what every one of the styles below is built from.

Six ways to wear it

1. The basic triangle (head)

Fold corner to corner. Hold the long edge across your forehead just above the eyebrows, let the point fall down the back, and bring the two ends around to the front. Tie them once, tuck the loose ends under the band, and pull the front edge down a centimetre so it sits flat rather than tight.

If the point keeps sliding, pinch a little of the fabric at the crown before you tie — that gives the fold something to grip.

2. The neck wrap

Fold into a triangle, then roll from the point towards the long edge until you have a band about 15 cm wide. Wrap it around the neck once and knot it at the front, or twice and tuck the ends in. This is the style most people keep for cold mornings and air-conditioned offices, and it is the one that creases least.

3. The shoulder cover

Open the square fully and drape it over both shoulders, then pin or knot it at one side. A 110 cm square covers the shoulders and upper back; a 131 cm cashmere-blend shawl will reach the elbows, which is why it is the size to pick if you want it to work as a wrap rather than a scarf.

4. The face cover, for dust

Fold into a triangle, hold the long edge over the bridge of the nose, cross the ends at the back of the head and tie. This is the desert-travel version — the point covers the neck, the weave lets you breathe, and it lifts off in one movement when the wind drops. Loose is safer than tight: a tight wrap fogs glasses and rubs the bridge of the nose.

5. The turban twist

Fold the square into a long band, centre it at the nape, cross both ends at the forehead, bring them back and tuck. This holds without a pin and suits a light polyester keffiyeh better than a heavy cotton one, because the fabric needs to grip itself.

6. The bag scarf

Not a wrap at all: fold the square into a band, thread it through a tote handle, knot it once and let the ends hang. It keeps a plain bag from looking plain, and it means the scarf travels with you instead of being forgotten at home.

Which size you need (110 cm vs 131 cm)

Our cotton keffiyehs and polyester keffiyehs are 110 × 110 cm — the size these wraps were designed around, and the one that ties without bulk. The 131 cm squares were cut for prayer and for shoulder wear: bigger drape, more coverage, and a longer tail, which makes a knot sit lower on the chest.

If you only own one, buy the 110 cm — the plain black cotton keffiyeh is the scarf every style above was folded on. If you want a wrap that doubles as a light blanket on a plane, buy the 131 cm. The full breakdown is in our keffiyeh size guide.

Keeping it in shape

Folding on the same creases every day is what eventually weakens the weave. Alternate the fold direction, and store it flat or rolled rather than hung from one corner. Cotton softens with washing; the print stays sharp if you keep it out of direct sun while it dries — the method is in how to wash a keffiyeh.

Where to go next

Every style above works with anything in the full keffiyeh, ghutrah and prayer scarf catalogue. If you are buying for a shop or a group, the wholesale buying guide explains how pricing drops from 100 pieces, and you can always ask us which weave suits the climate you are buying for. If the pattern is the part you cannot decide, keffiyeh pattern meanings explains which designs carry a tradition and which are simply prints; if you are wrapping for winter rather than summer, read keffiyeh in cold weather before you buy a lighter weave.
