Prayer Scarf for Hajj and Umrah: What to Pack
This is a packing note, not a religious one. We make the cloth; the rites, the rules about what to wear and where belong to your own guidance and your own school, and they vary. What follows is only about the scarf itself: how many, what size, what colour and how to keep it clean when you are sharing a bathroom with forty people.
The cloth, not the rites
A prayer scarf is a piece of fabric you put on the ground or over your shoulders. In our range it is a 131 cm square, larger than a keffiyeh, in cotton or a cotton blend, with a plain or lightly patterned face. It is not a prayer rug and does not replace one — the difference in construction and in use is set out in prayer scarf vs prayer rug.
If your practice requires a particular garment or coverage that our squares do not provide, that is the deciding factor and no product page should talk you out of it.
How many to take
Two is the number that works for most people. One on you or in your day bag, one clean and dry in the suitcase. A single scarf means washing it on the one evening you are exhausted; three is weight you will carry for a fortnight and use once.
If you are travelling with family, pack per person rather than a shared pile. Scarves have a way of migrating, and the person who ends up with none is usually the one who did not pack their own.
White, cream or colour
White and cream are the traditional choice and the practical one in heat: they reflect light, they show dust but not sweat, and they look clean even when they are not. The cost is that they show a stain from a shared bathroom floor, so a white scarf is the one that gets washed most.
A dark or patterned scarf hides the marks a floor leaves and is easier to keep presentable on a long trip. Many people take one of each: white for the days that matter, a patterned one for travel days and dust. If you want to see how colour behaves in sun, the keffiyeh colours guide covers that.
What size covers what
131 cm is the size we cut for prayer: folded, it gives a long edge of roughly 185 cm, enough to go over the shoulders and stay there while you move, or to lay out with room for hands and forehead. A 110 cm keffiyeh is a scarf; it will do in a pocket but it will not stay over a shoulder without being held.
If you are buying one cloth for both uses — prayer and a head cover in the sun — take the 131 cm and accept the extra weight. If you want the smaller square for everyday wear, that is a different decision, and the keffiyeh size guide goes through the sizes properly.
Washing when you share a bathroom
You will not have a machine and you will not have space. The method that works: a sink or a bucket, cold water, a drop of detergent if you have it, press the cloth under the water rather than scrubbing it, rinse twice, then roll it in a towel and stand on the towel. It is dry in a few hours in a warm place, overnight in a cold one.
Take a small mesh laundry bag. It keeps the scarf off a shared floor, it keeps the fringe from tangling in a tap, and it doubles as a wet bag on a travel day. A second, thinner scarf is worth more than a bottle of fabric conditioner.
Packing it so it arrives flat
Roll, do not fold. Make a band first, roll it from one end, and put the roll in the middle of the case with clothes around it. A rolled scarf arrives with soft curves that hang out in an hour; a folded one arrives with two hard lines that need an iron you will not have.
Put a clean one inside a plastic bag if you are worried about dust in transit — but only for the journey, and only when it is completely dry. The folding and rolling method in detail is in how to fold and store a keffiyeh.
Buying before you travel
Buy early enough to wash it once before you pack it. A new cotton scarf shrinks a little in the first wash and softens noticeably, and you want both of those things to happen at home rather than in a hotel sink. Check the fringe before you go: a loop caught now is a minute's work, a loop left in a suitcase for a fortnight is a hole — see keffiyeh fringe and repairs.
If you want one that folds flat into a day bag and does not mind being sat on, the black and white diamond-weave prayer scarf is the one we take on trips. The prayer scarf range is the 131 cm squares; the full catalogue of keffiyehs and prayer scarves shows what else we cut, and if you are buying for a group travelling together, message us before you order so the batch can be cut and packed together.
