Keffiyeh vs Shemagh vs Ghutrah: What's the Difference?

Keffiyeh vs Shemagh vs Ghutrah: What's the Difference?

People search for a “keffiyeh” and get results calling the same thing a shemagh, a ghutrah, a hatta or a kufiya. They are not six products. They are six words for a square cloth that different regions, generations and trades named separately — and the differences that matter when you buy are size, fibre and finish, not the label.

The short answer

Keffiyeh and shemagh are the two names you will meet most often in English. Ghutrah is the Gulf word for the same headcloth. Hatta, kufiya and yashmagh are regional variants you will still hear in Egypt, the Levant and Syria. If someone is selling you a “shemagh” that is 110 cm square and woven in cotton, it is the same object as a “keffiyeh” of the same size.

The comparison people actually need most often is with something else entirely: the cotton bandana in a drawer. That is a different cloth at a different size and it ties differently, so it has its own guide — keffiyeh vs bandana.

Where each word comes from

Keffiyeh

The word most associated with the Levant and Iraq, and the one that has travelled furthest into English. It usually describes a square cotton cloth, often patterned, worn folded over the head and held with an agal or tied at the side.

Shemagh

Common in Jordan and across the Gulf, and adopted by military surplus markets in Europe and North America, which is why “shemagh” is the word most outdoor and tactical buyers use. A shemagh is often cut larger than a dress keffiyeh and woven a little heavier, but plenty of sellers use the two words interchangeably.

Ghutrah

The Gulf name — the white or patterned cloth worn under the headband. In Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia you will hear ghutrah far more often than keffiyeh, and the plain white version is the formal one.

Hatta, kufiya, yashmagh

Hatta is used in Egypt and parts of the Levant; kufiya is the Arabic diminutive you will see spelled a dozen ways in English; yashmagh is the Syrian term. Same square, same folds, different local vocabulary.

What actually differs

Size

A dress keffiyeh is usually around 110–120 cm on the side. Our cotton keffiyeh collection and the polyester keffiyehs are both 110 × 110 cm. Tactical net shemaghs are cut differently — some square at 131 cm, some rectangular at 190 × 90 cm — because they are worn over a helmet or wrapped for dust rather than tied as daily dress.

Fibre and weave

Cotton is the traditional choice: it breathes, it softens with washing, and it holds a fold. Polyester dries faster and prints more crisply, which is why patterned fashion shemaghs are usually polyester. Poly-cotton net is an open weave built for heat — you can see through it, and that is the point.

Pattern

The black-and-white fishnet pattern most people picture is one option among many. Houndstooth, chevron, camouflage, skull prints, plains and borders all exist, and none of them decides whether a piece is a keffiyeh or a shemagh. The ones that carry a tradition, and the ones that are purely modern, are set out in keffiyeh pattern meanings.

How we name things on this site

We use keffiyeh for the 110 cm woven squares, shemagh in product names where the pattern or the cut is the tactical kind, and ghutrah where the piece is the plain Gulf style. It is a naming convention for a catalogue, not a claim about what your family calls it.

Choosing by use, not by name

If you want a daily head wrap that ties neatly, buy 110 cm cotton — the plain black cotton keffiyeh is that piece at its plainest. If you want something light for heat or travel, buy polyester. If you need dust protection over a helmet or in a vehicle, buy net, like the jungle green net shemagh. If you are buying for prayer, the prayer scarf vs prayer rug covers that range separately.

And if you are unsure of the size, the keffiyeh size guide has the measurements next to the styles they suit. Everything in the full keffiyeh and prayer scarf catalogue follows the same sizing rules.

If the naming is still getting in the way, send us a photo or a description of what you are after and we will tell you which cut and fibre it is.
